Le Marais is a district in Paris, traditionally a bourgeois area, but also well-known historically.
From the 16th century onwards, the aristocracy built large residences in the area, a trend which was accelerated by the creation of the Place Royale by Henri IV in 1605. The Marais has a lot of museums, and you'll have your pick of several on the surrounding streets, nearly all housed in lavish hôtels particuliers.
