La cité aurait été le chef-lieu primitif de l'Albanais, pagus albanensis, l'un des sept districts de la Savoie sous Charlemagne. L'origine d'Alby est en effet très ancienne puisque son nom apparaît sur l'un des plus vieux documents concernant la Savoie en 867.
