The Island is an old harbor area in northern Antwerp. It started in the second half of the 16th century and was originally called Newtown. Later, people called this area Island because it is entirely surrounded by docks. The two oldest docks of Antwerp, the Bonapartedock and Willemdock, now form the core of the Island.
