Ancient Roman Building

INSULA DELL'ARA COELI

At the foot of the Capitoline Hill in Rome are the remains of a Roman insula, an apartment building. It is a unique example of an insula, the type of building that during the imperial period, most inhabitants of Rome were housed. It is exposed to the Via del Teatro di Marcello, under the stairs leading to the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, discovered during excavations in the years 1928-1930.
