ÉGLISE SAINT-JEAN DE LIÈGE

The Church of St. John the Evangelist, also called Saint-Jean- en-l'isle (because a branch of the Meuse created once an island at this point) was built during the episcopate of Notger at the end of the tenth century, between 980 and 987. This church was a replica of the Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle Charlemagne. Notger, the first prince-bishop of the Principality of Liège, was buried in the year 1008 in the collegiate church of Saint John.
