Jumièges is well-known throughout the world for its abbey, "The most beautiful ruin in France"; the abbey housed one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in the West. The abbey's history is punctuated by periods of darkness, destruction and decline, as well as major periods of reconstruction led by a number of important abbots, including Robert Champart, who also became Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishop of London.
