The museum's history is inextricably linked to that of its founder, the leading historian of Rouen faience, André Pottier (1799-1867). The Rouen city authority acquired his collection of some 1100 pieces and the first Musée de la Céramique, installed in a gallery of the former Couvent Sainte-Marie, now the Musée des Antiquités de Rouen, was opened in 1864.
