The Museu de l’Empordà, located in the town of Figueres, possesses one of the most outstanding art collections.
Founded in 1946, the origins of its collections go back to the end of the 19th century, thanks to donations and bequests from famous local citizens and from the vaults of the Prado Museum in Madrid. In 1971 the current building was constructed to house the museum of archaeology, history and art of the town and the region, with a major donation from the collector, Frederic Marès.
