These 12th-century Banys Arabs (Arab baths), an example of Romanesque civic architecture, are in the old quarter of the city. They date back to 1194 and were probably developed out of a Jewish mikwe (ritual bath). In the 15th century, they came into private ownership until 1617 when they became part of the Order of Capuchin nuns' convent, which they used as a laundry room. In 1929, however, Girona's monumental Arab Baths was declared Spanish Patrimony and the reconstruction and repair of these ancient baths could begin.
